How do Hycrete Admixtures work?

Hycrete Admixtures react with metals in the water, concrete, and steel reinforcement. From the reaction, a precipitate is formed where one end of the molecule has a long hydrocarbon chain. Like oil repels water, this precipitate fills the capillaries of the concrete, repelling water and shutting down capillary absorption.

Are there any disadvantages to using Hycrete Admixtures?

Hycrete Admixtures can affect air entrainment. Mixes incorporating Hycrete can be expected to have slightly lower compressive strengths compared to control mixes. This is easily compensated by normal means, such as the use of water reducers, increased cement, or lowering the W/C ratio (no more than 0.42 is recommended).

Trial batches should be performed and appropriate adjustments made to the mix design prior to use.

What makes Hycrete Admixtures environmentally intelligent?

Hycrete is certified under MBDC Cradle to Cradle protocol. Integral waterproofing eliminates exterior membranes or coatings, which are typically applied using high VOC primers/adhesives or made of petroleum-based substances. These membranes are often permanently bonded to concrete and prohibit recycling post demolition. The concrete and membranes therefore go straight to landfill (concrete is 40-50% of the 140 million tons of construction and demolition debris in the U.S.). Hycrete Admixtures are environmentally benign and when mixed in concrete, they do not detract from concrete's existing sustainable characteristics.

Do Hycrete Admixtures increase or decrease the risk of cracking?

A fundamental chracteristic of concrete is that it will crack over time. Post tensioning and shrinkage reducing admixtures can help reduce the amount of cracking that occurs. Hycrete Admixtures has shown to provide autogenous or self healing of some cracks in concrete and does prevent corrosion of rebar in cracked concrete.
