Many strategies are used to increase the life of water and wastewater systems and avoid expensive repairs and replacement. Coatings and membranes are used to stop water and corrosive agents from entering the concrete, but they can be expensive and time-consuming to install and generally need regular repairs. Permeability reducers, including integral crystalline waterproofing and high-performance concrete, claim to reduce the penetration of water and corrosive salts but may increase water absorption and do not protect the reinforcing steel itself. Corrosion inhibitors protect the rebar from some corroders but do not stop the water from entering the concrete. Rebar coatings such as galvanization and epoxy-coated rebar protect the reinforcing bar except for where there are scratches and other damage to the coating, which often happen during installation.
Hycrete solutions, which provide integral waterproofing and corrosion inhibition, extend the life of concrete structures in a number of ways. They reduce the absorption of water into the concrete, making waterproof concrete and reducing the opportunity for corrosive agents dissolved in water to attack the rebar. They form a protective layer around the reinforcing bar, further protecting it. They help heal small cracks in concrete, further reducing the prospect of leaks and corrosion. Hycrete admixtures have superior performance in corrosion in slightly cracked concrete compared with high performance concrete or calcium nitrite corrosion inhibitors.
Hycrete solutions can be used on their own, or in conjunction with other protective systems. They can be used with coated rebar, supplementary cementitious materials such as fly ash and slag, and coatings and membranes. They generally work well with membranes, forming good bonds and reducing weather delays for membrane application*. When used with coated rebar, they protect the steel exposed in scratches and nicks on the coating.
Water Supply Systems
For reservoirs, dams, filtration and treatment plants, tanks, concrete pipes, biosolids management, and other parts of the water supply system built with concrete, durability is an issue. Hycrete solutions can protect against leaks and corrosion, as discussed above.
Waste Water Systems
Many parts of waste water systems may be built with concrete, including waste water treatment plants, tanks, concrete pipes, pump stations, and sludge handling / biosolids management. As waste water corrosion is aggressive, durability is an issue. Hycrete products provide superior protection against corrosive agents which dissolve in water, and can be used in conjunction with other systems to protect against the full range of corrosive agents in waste water, as noted above.
Storm Water Systems
Storm sewers, storm ditches, concrete pipes, and other parts of storm water systems should last a long time. Their durability can be protected using Hycrete solutions, as explained above.
Flood Control Systems
Dikes, levees, pumping stations, floodgates, and other parts of flood control systems are sometimes built with concrete, which can corrode over time and reduce the life cycle of the system. As discussed above, the life cycle can be increased using Hycrete solutions to protect against water ingress and corrosion.
Industrial and Agricultural Waste
Some of the corrosive agents in industrial and agricultural waste are dissolved in water, and Hycrete solutions can protect against damage from those elements as well as generally protecting against water ingress.

*There are thousands of membranes and coatings. Hycrete admixtures have been tested with many of them and there have not been issues with coating and membrane compatibility. Please check with Hycrete, Inc. that the membrane or coating that you are using has been tested with Hycrete products.
